Stunwall & PhotoMania: Two Stunningly Simple Image Editors You Need To Try

Stunwall & PhotoMania: Two Stunningly Simple Image Editors You Need To Try

Stunwall & PhotoMania: Two Stunningly Simple Image Editors You Need To Try

These days, you can edit photos absolutely anywhere. On your computer, in your browser, on your phone, and on your tablet. Everything’s possible. Editing photos in your browser is one of the simplest and easiest ways to go, and there are tons of tools out there to try.
I’ve recently found two online image editors that stand out from the crowd. One offering heaps of options for free, one that is refreshingly basic. Curious? Give them both a try.

PhotoMania

Before getting started, you should know that PhotoMania is still in beta, and is therefore missing basic features such as cropping, resizing and rotating. I’m assured those will be added soon, but for now, crop and rotate somewhere else and then head over to PhotoMania.
While it in no way competes with professional photo editors (nor does it try to), PhotoMania has one of the largest variety of editing features I’ve seen in a free online tool. From basic filters to sophisticated patterns and stencils, I lost count somewhere around 300. All of these are completely free, at least for the moment there are no “premium only” shenanigans.
photomania
To start using PhotoMania, upload a photo from your computer, grab one from Facebook, or shoot one with your web cam. You can then browse between artistic filters (sketch, magical, paint, camera, etc.), fun filters (illusions, magazines, drawing, and even tech), e-card filters, which help you create quick greeting cards from your own photos, and a special Christmas section for Christmas-y stuff.
I know, it looks tacky, but it’s in fact quite impressive. Here are some examples I’ve created with PhotoMania using the photo you see above.
Graffiti:
photomania-2
Sketch:
photomania-3
And even a techie version of my photo:
photomania-4
You can only apply one filter at a time, so when you apply one, you lose the other. There’s also no way to undo a filter once you’ve applied it, but since any new filter is applied to the original photo anyway, it doesn’t matter much. At any point, click the “Before & After” button on top to see the differences between current and original versions.
photomania-5
When you’re done, you can download your photo, print it, and on paper, share it too. Why on paper? Because the “Share Photo” button did absolutely nothing when I tried it, but who knows, it may work for you.
PhotoMania requires no sign up and no log in. Just upload your photo and start working. You’d be surprised at the fun and beautiful things you can create.

Stunwall

Stunwall is a different story altogether. Forget hundreds of free filters and effects — all you get are 7 filters. That’s it. This makes Stunwall into one of the simplest and fastest ways to apply a nice filter to a photo and get on with your life.
stunwall
Aside from those basic filters, which are all pretty natural-looking and laid back, you also get to manually control the photo’s brightness and vignette. In literally seconds after uploading your photo or snapping it using your web cam, you can have your enhanced version.
When you’re done, there are several things you can do: Give it a name and save it to your computer; give it a title and some hashtags and share it on Facebook or Twitter; or publish it within Stunwall and get a link to share with friends. When they view it, your friends will be able to like it, share it, and comment on it. You don’t need an account in order to do this — Stunwall creates a random one for you when you publish — but if you want to have access to all your photos, create an account and log in.
Stunwall’s grace is in its simplicity. It doesn’t offer sophisticated filters, but you’ll get a better image than your original, and you’ll get it fast.

From Boys To Men: 4 Subreddits All Guys Should Read

From Boys To Men: 4 Subreddits All Guys Should Read

From Boys To Men: 4 Subreddits All Guys Should Read

Physical appearances matter. Ideally they wouldn’t but the cold truth is that human beings tend to make snap judgments about everything based on first impressions — and it feels wrong to do so. “The inside is more important than the outside,” right? Well, our physical appearances actually say a lot about us and it’s important that we don’t neglect that aspect of our humanity.
Not that physical beauty is an indicator of moral purity or personality — no one should ever judge another person’s worth as a human being based on their outer skin. But at the same time, that shouldn’t be an excuse not to take care of ourselves in terms of hygiene, appearance, personal growth, and ultimately self-esteem. This joke hits the point home:
Q. What do you call a man who dresses nicely and takes care of himself?
A. A grown up.
Men, there are some great subreddits on Reddit where you can find others just like you and me who are working to be the best men that they can be. I’m currently going through this transformation myself and I will never look back. What about you?

/r/nutrition & /r/fitness

reddit-fitness
Your health, both mental and physical, is one of the most important things to watch. There are the big health sins that should be avoided when possible — like excessive drinking and smoking — but there are also more subtle activities that could have long-lasting impact on your health, like not sleeping enough, eating too much processed food, or sitting in front of a computer all day. (Guilty as charged.)
The quickest and most effective way to improve both physical energy and mental clarity is by eating healthier. Not that you need to be a rabbit and eat salad 3 times a day, but even something as simple as cutting out soda can have drastic results. /r/nutrition is a good place to start if you haven’t given it much thought before and with the aid of certain websites, eating healthy can be easy.
Exercise is also important. Our bodies were meant to move around and do things. You don’t even have to lift heavy weights or run for miles; just a brisk jog for 20 minutes a day can be extremely beneficial. Check /r/fitness for more on that.

/r/malefashionadvice

reddit-malefashionadvice
Two years ago, my wardrobe consisted of nothing more than white t-shirts, hoodies, and baggy jeans. I was 23 years old back then but strangers often mistook me for being 15 years old or younger! A quick change to my wardrobe was enough to help me look more my age.
Fashion doesn’t have to be about runways and flashy colors. On the contrary, it’s all about wearing clothes that fit properly and developing a personal sense of style that exhibits your personality. Slim jeans and t-shirts? Sure. Leather and chains? Okay. Drop-crotch and sneakers? Go for it. But make sure your clothes fit!
/r/malefashionadvice has exploded in popularity over the past year and still more newcomers arrive every day. There are plenty of style veterans who give out great advice on sizing, colors, materials, prices, etc. Don’t be afraid to take the plunge. You won’t regret it.
reddit-malehairadvice
The next step after fitness and fashion? Hair! Hair can single-handedly alter the way you look, sometimes so radically that you appear to be a different person altogether. There’s more complexity to male hairstyles than a simple choice between shaved androckstar.
I used to shave my head every 2 months using just an electric clipper. It was easy, it was fast, and it was convenient. That last word — “convenience” — seems to be the drive behind most male hair these days. Any sort of maintenance is viewed as beingmetrosexual, which is far from the case.
Hair maintenance doesn’t have to be elaborate. Just cut it in a particular style and wash it regularly. The /r/malehairadvice subreddit will help you find a good style that won’t just fit your face but emphasize and enhance it.

/r/malelivingspace

reddit-malelivingspace
The last thing you ought to maintain with passion is your living space. Depending on the content, some people call it the “man cave” and others call it a “bachelor pad,” but one thing’s for sure: a messy home can have a negative impact on your mental state in addition to being embarrassing when guests are over.
But /r/malelivingspace is about more than just dusting off your home and making it presentable. It’s about transforming your living space into one that you’ll love. It’s about organization, aesthetics, and synergy. Whether you’re living in a dorm or with a family, there’s a lot of good stuff to learn here.
Now, what about you? Do you care enough about your holistic health? Tell us what you think about these subreddits (or any other), and any great tips you have come across.

Amazon Accused, Yahoo Katie, One Windows, ZTE Smartwatch [Tech News Digest]

Amazon Accused, Yahoo Katie, One Windows, ZTE Smartwatch [Tech News Digest]

Amazon Accused, Yahoo Katie, One Windows, ZTE Smartwatch [Tech News Digest]

Today in Tech News Digest, Amazon has its warehouse working conditions investigated, Katie Couric ditches ABC for Yahoo, Google Shopping enjoys a makeover, Microsoft spells out its vision for the future, Google Translate edges closer to being Star Trek tech, ZTE announces a smartwatch, and Yahoo sends a bizarre internal memo out to its Outlook-loving workforce.

Amazon’s Working Conditions Investigated

Amazon has been accused of risking the physical and mental health of its employees thanks to unfavorable working conditions. The BBC sent an undercover reporter into a UK-based Amazon warehouse to be employed as a picker. This job involves collecting orders as they come in, with the products spread across the 800,000 sq ft of storage space.
The BBC claims that the reporter was meant to collect an order every 33 seconds, with a scanner tracking his performance. If his picking rate was too low he was told he could face disciplinary action. Furthermore, each shift was 10-and-a-half hours long, and the reporter covered 11 miles of walking during that time.
Amazon has rejected accusations that the working conditions are “all the bad stuff at once,” as suggested by Professor Michael Marmot, an expert on stress at work. Marmot claims that with the “characteristics of this type of job, the evidence shows increased risk of mental illness and physical illness.” Amazon has stated that an independent expert found no evidence of this.
Consumer Affairs makes it clear that this is not the first time such criticisms have been leveled at Amazon, with various investigations and exposés having occurred previously. It’s all a question of perspective, of course, but this report should at least act as a reminder that ordering a product online means someone, somewhere is working hard on your behalf.

Katie Couric Joins Yahoo

Yahoo has hired Katie Couric as its “global anchor,” with Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer describing Couric as “the face of Yahoo News.” Couric, who is currently employed by ABC News both as a special correspondent and host of ‘Katie’, will join Yahoo in 2014. What she’ll actually be doing has been left rather vague, with Mayer simply stating that Couric will be working with the “editorial team to pioneer a new chapter of digital journalism.”
As stated by AllThingsD, Couric has dabbled in digital journalism in the past, but she’s massively well known for being a recognizable face of old media rather than new media. Thus her move from ABC to Yahoo is a huge feather in the cap for Yahoo, and in particular, Mayer. Grabbing such a big name is likely to have cost Yahoo millions, so it has to be considered a gamble at this stage.

Google Shopping Overhaul

Google Shopping has been overhauled to make it more visually appealing, as well as responsive, across a range of devices. New features include a “visually similar” search option, easy previews, a 360-degree view of selected products, and ‘Shortlists’. The latter is a way of keeping all the products you’re interested in purchasing in one place. Ah, consumerism at its finest.

One Windows Future

Microsoft is working its way towards having just one version of Windows, at least according to Microsoft’s head of devices, Julie Larson-Green. At the recent UBS Global Technology Conference, she said, “We have the Windows Phone OS. We have Windows RT and we have full Windows. We’re not going to have three.” Paring three operating systems down to one universal operating system is a tricky task, but Microsoft seems up for the challenge. Whether the company can turn this vision into a reality is, however, yet to be seen.

Google Translate Improved

The Google Translate app for Android has been updated, with the result being faster and more simple translations. As well as a new look and support for gesture control, you can now enjoy a “translated back and forth conversation by catching the foreign language with a press on the microphone icon.” This brings Google Translate closer to being the universal translator from sci-fi folklore than ever before. Ce qui est assez étonnant.

ZTE Announces Smartwatch

ZTE is the latest company to have announced it’s working on a smartwatch. The Chinese telecom company plans to unveil its smartwatch at the beginning of 2014, and is promising similar specs as the Samsung Galaxy Gear, but delivered at a cheaper price. The ZTE smartwatch will only be compatible with ZTE smartphones, though the company has plans for a wider Android-compatible offering in the future. This is assuming smartwatches have a future, of course, which is something many tech pundits are unwilling to bet on.

The Strangest Internal Memo Ever

And finally, in what has to be (at least one of) the strangest internal memos from a tech company to have leaked on the Internetz, Yahoo execs have implored their employees to use Yahoo Mail. Until recently the company used Microsoft’s Outlook (which is odd in itself) but it now wants its entire workforce to ditch the Microsoft email service in favor of its own.

Make Smarter Travel Decisions As Bing Displays TripAdvisor Reviews In Search

TripAdvisor made two updates in one day, and both involve Microsoft. TripAdvisor released a new touch-friendly Windows 8.1 app that’s available for free on the Windows Store. The app brings the travel site’s 125 million reviews and opinions, high-resolution photos right on your desktop. The most significant thing about the partnership is that TripAdvisor is now also integrated with Bing Smart Search. Any travel-related search on Bing will now display content from TripAdvisor, helping you make intelligent travel decisions.
Bing Search will show you TripAdvisor reviews, photos, hotel ratings, and hotel price comparison information from the same tool that’s on the site. The Hotel Price Comparison tool from TripAdvisor not only enables travelers stick to budgets but also plan their logistics during the journey. Costs savings can be calculated instantly and hotels booked instantly. The at-a-glance travel information integrated with Bing search results is a huge time saver when you can do everything within a few clicks.
TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor said in the announcement:
In the U.S., we are partnering with Bing to embed TripAdvisor’s price comparison tools, traveler reviews and photos within search results on Bing.com. Now, when you search for somewhere to stay on Bing, you’ll have instant access to our community’s reviews and ratings without needing to leave the page. And, if you have specific dates in mind, you can see which hotels are available and at what price. You can go from thinking about where to go to being ready to book in a matter of seconds.
Do you use the Web to make informed travel decisions?

4 Tips To Be A Productive Writer And Still Avoid A Blogging Burnout

Unknown | 08:41 | Be the first to Comment!
4 Tips To Be A Productive Writer And Still Avoid A Blogging Burnout

4 Tips To Be A Productive Writer And Still Avoid A Blogging Burnout
Writers are particularly susceptible to burnout. I’ve always thought of burnout in the same way I think of the morning after a particularly strenuous session in the gym. Have you ever gone to the gym and put in every kilo joule of energy that you have available to you? Have you ever worked out so much that after a while, you can barely stand up straight? The morning after is a killer too. You’re stiff and sore, and everything feels like more effort than it’s worth.
Much like the muscles on your arms and legs, your brain can become so overworked that it stops being effective. Concentration becomes hard, and everything becomes taxing. Eventually, the only thing you’re fit to do is sit in your desk and glare at your monitor. You’re mentally exhausted. You’re burned out.
Writers know the feeling. There’s so much pressure to deliver on time, and to meet deadlines. Some writing projects might not be especially exciting. If you write for a print or digital publication, you might have the added stress of the expectation that your articles will reach a certain amount of popularity. If you’re a freelancer, there’s the added adventure of whether your clients will pay you on time, or whether you’re going to spend the next month dodging phone calls from your landlord and eating stale bread and beans.
All this adds up, and eventually the stress becomes unbearable. You’re no longer on the top of your game, and everything becomes a challenge. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to have some strategies to avoid burning out. Here are some that work for me:

Change your scenery

As a writer, you’ve got a lot of freedom to work from wherever you want. All you need is a laptop and an internet connection, and you’re good to go. Despite this, a lot of writers I’ve spoken to tend to work from within the same four walls, every day.
I find that working from a hackers pace, coffee shop or library makes me less distracted, and when I’ve spent a day working away from home, I’m less exhausted. It also means that once I’ve finished working, I can pretty much immediately do something fun like catch a movie or meet up with friends for a drink.
burnout-starbucks
If you feel that working from Starbucks isn’t quite your bag, you can always pick up and work from another country. British writer Paul Carr did just that, and detailed it in his book The Upgrade. If you’re thinking that a slightly more exotic change of scenery is your thing, you’d be well advised to have a look.

Get some sleep

man-sleeping
If you’ve got a heavy workload, you might find that you’re getting less sleep than you’d like. Sleep isn’t an unproductive waste of eight hours each night. It allows you to recharge your batteries, and to approach anything thrown at you with vigor. Here’s what the NIH has to say about the importance of sleep.
Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. … The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant (such as a car crash), or it can harm you over time. For example, ongoing sleep deficiency can raise your risk for some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others.
No matter what your schedule looks like, you should always make time for rest. An added bonus of being well rested is that you’ve got more energy to approach your work, meaning that things get done quicker.

Change How You Write

The Write Life is a popular writing blog, and earlier this year they published an article that attracted a lot of attention in the blogosphere. It was titled ‘Microsoft Word – Just Say No’ and the author, Will Moyer, argued that word processors such as Microsoft Office do not lend themselves favorably to the creative process of writing.
… word processors, especially ones like Microsoft Word, aren’t actually good tools for composition. The act of composing is about ordering and structuring thoughts. It’s not about setting your margins or choosing fonts or italicizing phrases. But word processors are notoriously bad at letting you just compose.
This is something I’m inclined to agree with. Word is horrible. It’s cluttered. Writing anything in it feels like a chore. Consider using a light weight word processor like iA Writer or Pages. This makes it easy to focus on the task at hand, and makes it easier for you to get your work done quicker.

Make Writing Fun Again

You probably became a writer because at one point in your life there was nothing else you thought you would want to do. But, somewhere along the line, your passion ebbed. Writing became less about escapism and creativity, and more about a paycheck. You spent less time working on your novels and poetry, and more on what your client demands.
burnout-writing
Take some time out to write for fun. Stretch yourself by writing for a genre which is entirely new to you. Perhaps even take the time to write an essay or some poetry. Rediscover what made writing fun for you in the first place.

Conclusion

Burnout happens to all of us eventually. Have you ever experienced it? How did you move past it? Let me know in the comments.

5 Websites Where Freelance Writers & Coders Can Find Work

5 Websites Where Freelance Writers & Coders Can Find Work

Deciding to freelance can be one of the scariest decisions you can make. Sure, there are plenty of benefits to freelancing, such as the freedom of working for yourself and not having a boss breathing down your shoulder in a cubicle all day, but there are also downsides. It’s hard work and there’s a bit of uncertainty when it comes to finding clients — and that can spell disaster if you’re banking on a steady income.
Freelancing is all about marketing yourself, but the difficulty comes in finding people and companies to whom you can market yourself. Fortunately, the stigma of the freelance worker (e.g., they’re all lazy, they’re incompetent, etc.) is subsiding and there are now more places to find freelancing gigs than ever before. With a bit of luck and a lot of effort, you can even turn it into a full-time career.

Odesk / Elance [Writers & Coders]

I have to include Odesk and Elance on this list because these two sites are where I first got my bearings as a freelance writer. Odesk and Elance are both large enough to be international so there are thousands of jobs from all over the world just waiting for you.
It all works on a system of credentials and bids. As a freelancer, you can sign up on these sites for free and fill out profiles that detail your work history, your background and experience, your competencies, and more. Odesk even has online tests that you can take to “prove” your expertise in areas like spelling, grammar, etiquette, programming languages, etc.
freelance-site-odesk
With a profile complete, you can browse the job listings and bid on the project. If the project owner feels that you are a good fit and cost effective, they’ll accept. You can also set how much you require in upfront costs to help combat against scammers (which, thankfully, aren’t too common). A small cut of whatever you earn goes to Odesk/Elance for facilitating the transaction.
Do note that because these sites are international, you may find yourself competing against bidders who can afford to take on jobs for pennies. Therefore, you should look for jobs that require a higher level of education and creativity — the kind of jobs where you can really sell your expertise.

Freelancer [Writers & Coders]

freelance-site-freelancer
Freelancer is the world’s largest freelancing network — even larger than Odesk or Elance — and it works in pretty much the same fashion: you sign up, you fill out your credentials, you bid on projects, and complete them for payment. With over 9 million users and 5 million projects, you’re bound to find some good stuff here.
Like Odesk and Elance, Freelancer has caught a lot of flak over the years. Is some of it warranted? Sure. In an open market like this, it’s inevitable that you will find project owners who are hard to work with and scammers who will try to run with your money, but Freelancer does their best to maintain the integrity of their service.
There are hundreds of job categories on Freelancer, including writing, web design, IT, coding, architecture, engineering, sales, marketing, translation, and more. Just know that you may need to slog through the rough to find the diamonds.

Craigslist [Writers & Coders]

freelance-site-craigslist
I haven’t searched for a new writing gig in a while, but during my search period, Craigslist was one of my favorite sites to browse. It’s one of the largest sites in the world and the writing/coding sections are updated with dozens of new listings every day. In fact, there are so many new listings that there are some blogs that only exist to curate these writing gigs.
The same caveats apply here as with any Craigslist-related endeavor: if it looks sketchy or unprofessional, it’s probably not worth your time. Better to be safe than sorry, right? Check the listings a few times per day (morning, noon, and night is a good frequency) and veer towards the projects that are presented professionally.
Problogger Jobs [Writers]
freelance-site-problogger
Problogger is a website dedicated to helping bloggers become better at what they do. As part of that mission, they have a job listings board where project owners can post their writing ads to find talented writers. It’s a smart move for everyone involved and the best part is that you don’t find the slush here that you’d usually find elsewhere — probably because it costs money to post a listing.
The downside, of course, is that you won’t find the same volume of potential work. There are only a couple of new listings every day, so if you aren’t fast at catching them and if you aren’t extremely good at selling yourself, it’ll be pretty tough to land some of these jobs.

GetACoder [Coders]

freelance-site-getacoder
GetACoder is a listing site that focuses solely on programming jobs. Despite the niche market, they get dozens of new listings every day. Topics range from video games to web applications to business suites and more. Sometimes a project will even be as simple as testing and quality assurance.
If you have some sharp programming knowledge across multiple fields, this may prove to be profitable for you. Some jobs will take you no longer than an hour while others might take you a few weeks or months. Make your bid, convince project owners why you’re worth the money, and blow them away with your best code.

Conclusion

Admittedly, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens, even hundreds, of other websites where you can find new writing and coding gigs to boost your income. With a bit of smart searching, you should be able to seek them out on Google, but for now the websites above will give you plenty of leads to start with.
For you freelancers, which websites do you use to find new work? And for those of you who seek freelancers, which websites do you post your listings to? It’d be great to hear from both sides of the coin. Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

Google Translate Android App Makes Translated Conversations Simpler

Google Translate Android App Makes Translated Conversations Simpler

The latest update to the Google Translate app on Android makes translation simpler and faster. The Google Translate app could be the “universal translator” you were looking for to break all linguistic barriers while travel hopping. It already supports more than 70 languages. It now gets a sleek new look and gesture support. More importantly, you can now have a translated back and forth conversation by catching the foreign language with a press on the microphone icon. Gesture support helps you switch between the translations with a turn of the screen.
Product Manager Mathew Gabba says now you can have a fully translated back-and-forth conversation “with very little work”. Additional language support also comes to the handwriting recognition feature – now, write in Hebrew, Javanese, and Esperanto on your device screen and have them translated on the fly. The camera translation feature is also bolstered with support for Malay and Ukranian. You can take a photo of written text (e.g. a signpost) and translate the highlighted words.
google-translate
Google Translate removes some of the worries of travelling to a strange new country. It may not be able to translate everything faithfully, but at least you know that it can handle critical translations like signs, menus, directions etc. The enhanced translated conversations should also help to ride over some of the language obstacles.

Google Shopping Gets Overhauled With 360-Degree Pics, Previews, Shortlists

Google Shopping Gets Overhauled With 360-Degree Pics, Previews, Shortlists

With the number of services Google offers, it’s easy to forget about a few. Google Shopping doesn’t see much love, but it’s just had a big update in time for the holiday season, introducing 360-degree photos, previews, ‘visually similar’ search, and shortlists to help you keep a track of products and make it a social experience—just days after Amazon tied up with Facebook to become more social.
Shortlists are essentially lists you make when you are looking for a certain type of product, whether for yourself or as a gift. You can add a bunch of products to your shortlist, and Google will automatically add the price and detailed information about it. Plus, you aren’t restricted to adding only those items you see on Google shopping—grab any link from the web and you can save it in your shortlist. Each item also has the option to add notes to it, letting you remember important details. And finally, you can share the shortlist with someone else so that you can talk about the gift or they can add more items they saw. This kind of systematic approach might just help avoid shopping impulsively online.
Google Shopping’s UI has been overhauled for a cleaner, responsive interface across desktop, tablet and mobile. “Click on a product to preview details like sizes, colors and description, and find out if it’s available at a nearby local store. If you see an item that’s almost perfect but not quite, click to view “visually similar” items,” Google said in a blog post.
Finally, some products also come with 360-degree photos, if enabled by the retailer, which you can pan and scan to look at it from all angles. It’s pretty cool, but it worked on very few products that I checked out.
Try out the new Google Shopping experience and let us know what you think of it.
